Realism: Many artists, particularly those from the Renaissance, created realistic self-portraits, focusing on accuracy and detail to capture their appearance. This approach often includes intricate details, like skin texture and subtle expressions, to present a truthful reflection of the artist.
Abstract and Expressionist: Some artists, such as Pablo Picasso and Egon Schiele, use abstraction to emphasize emotion over realism. By distorting facial features or exaggerating colors, they capture feelings that might otherwise be hidden in a realistic portrayal.
Symbolic Self-Portrait: Artists often include symbols in their self-portraits to convey deeper meanings. For instance, Salvador Dalí painted himself surrounded by surreal, dreamlike imagery that symbolized his thoughts and subconscious mind. Symbolic self-portraits reveal aspects of the artist’s personality and interests that extend beyond their physical appearance.
